This Year’s 37th annual science Expo and International Science Festival (ISF) held at the Birchwood Hotel and OR Tambo Conference. The festival was launched almost four decades ago. The expo is for pupils from grade 5-12 they really have the most captivating projects that are intellectually though through. This year’s expo has gotten bigger and better not only from the audience perception but also what the young scientists showcase. They are not only have a bright future in the field of science but they present a lot of innovative projects.

The Eskom expo allows entrances from all over the continent. The 611 finalist display their science projects across 24 categories like; agricultural sciences, animal and veterinary science, chemistry, computer science, energy efficiency & conservation and many more. The fair also has an international based event which is in the United States of America. For the past decade South Africa has entered and came back with prizes whilst some countries enter but go back to their home countries empty handed.

The expo is aimed at motivating young scientists and also give them a platform where they can grow and learn that nerd is cool. These kids make sure that their projects include all the research they need to prove that the project is not only for entrance but can go all the way to the international finals.

Some go as far as inventing solutions to the problems we face in society, their project sometimes are ways to conserve the environment also advancing the way we live.

The Chairman mentioned that the prizes are worth 4 million divided into bursaries, cash rewards, scientific equipment and visits to other international science fairs. Varsity TV took the initiative to visit the Expo when it was opened to the media on the 5th of October.

It was quite an experience to see that there’s such positive things happening in the country whilst we are dealing with negative situations such as drugs, high school drop outs, expensive tertiary education, teenage pregnancy and bullying. But with the attitude that was in the expo you could hear it in the voices when they pitched their projects that this is their passion and Eskom really did a good job opening this platform for them they can meet other kids with same interests, who are focused, love science and they actually practice it in a tender age.
